How much would you pay for a strawberry?

A specific type of strawberry originating from Kyoto in Japan is going viral and dubbed 'the best-tasting strawberry in the world'.

The strawberry and its price first went viral when TikTok user Alyssa (@alyssaantocii) recorded her live reaction to the expensive fruit from a store called Erewhon.

A single strawberry at this store costs about R372 ($19/£15), probably making it the most expensive one in the world.

In the video, Alyssa explains that each large berry is served individually packaged, covered with a tiny dome on a 'little tray'.

The reason for the fruit's expensive price is that it's supposedly one of the 'highest-quality fruits from Japan’s most celebrated farms'.

Alyssa's taste test received a whopping 9.7 million views so far.

"It's actually the best-tasting strawberry I've ever had," Alyssa told her followers.

"Is it a social experiment to make a splash for Erewhon or are these strawberries grown in a special environment in Japan's most celebrated farms, or is it all a little bit of a stunt? I don't know," says Friedman.

Many influencers have also tasted this strawberry, making it #trending.

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the pricey fruit in the comments section:

"This is so dystopian," wrote one baffled viewer.

"If I dropped $20 on a strawberry, I’d probably convince myself it was the best one I’ve ever tasted too," pointed out another person.

"There’s no hope for us as a society," wrote one TikTok user.

"Stuff like this is a slap in the face to poor people in poor countries. I refuse to give into excessive consumerism," said another follower.
