CapeTalk's Pippa Hudson speaks to DIY expert Angelo D’Ambrosio of IPMT remedial building consultants, and specialist Anne Darne of Intesec Electronics.
Listen below:
D’Ambrosio and Darne dive into ways to improve your home security without spending an arm and a leg...
Some things you can do for free for improved home security:
- Make sure vegetation is trimmed.
- No hiding spots for people.
- Make sure lighting is good and no dark areas around the home at night.
If you have a bit of money to spend:
- Invest in a DIY alarm system which is wireless and easy to install by yourself.
- Install a camera - most run on Wi-Fi or solar, so it's easy to install and connect.
Ideally, you'd want to place cameras in areas in your home that offer the quickest getaway from the house.
Don't forget about loadshedding...
For devices using electricity supply and the possibility of loadshedding, ensure batteries in all home security devices have a lifespan between five and six years, and check that they work.
Additionally, check wireless beams and run security systems such as cameras, intercoms, electric gates through small UPS systems like an inverter during loadshedding.
It might also be useful to tie a motion sensor beam such as a panning light to a wall or tree, which can help deter criminals.
Do regular checks on your home security systems to ensure they work.
