JOHANNESBURG - The City of Tshwane municipality’s group audit and risk department is set to investigate a possible conflict of interest between a contracted service provider and the deputy mayor, Eugene Modise.
In February, the Democratic Alliance (DA) alleged Modise was unethically benefitting from contracts awarded to a security company linked to his family.
Speaking on the sidelines of a housing project earlier on Wednesday, Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya said the city was taking the allegations seriously.
Modise has admitted to being the former owner of Triotic Protection Services. However, he said he resigned from the company in 2023 before he became a councillor for the African National Congress (ANC).
The DA in Tshwane said the company is still being run by Modise’s family members.
Moya said she had instituted an internal investigation.
“Because, obviously, these are important allegations especially when the company is being touted as a future beneficiary in other tenders as well, so we then asked the city manager to process (the investigation).”
No timelines have been set yet on when the investigation will be complete.
