702's John Perlman interviews Nicholas Avramis, Managing Director at Beaver Immigration Consulting.
Listen below:
President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed concern over the growing exodus of South African nurses seeking employment abroad, amid a pressing nursing shortage in the country.
According to Avramis, the primary reason behind this migration is the lack of sufficient employment opportunities within South Africa.
He says that there are approximately 20,000 to 30,000 qualified nurses currently unemployed in the country.
"There's a significant number of unemployed nurses in this country."
- Nicholas Avramis, Managing Director – Beaver Immigration Consulting
For those who are employed, irregular payment schedules have become a major motivator for seeking work elsewhere, Avramis adds.
Additionally, safety concerns – particularly for female nurses working late shifts – are an often overlooked factor contributing to the exodus.
Avramis explains that we live in a globalised job market where skilled professionals, including South African nurses, are increasingly looking to secure the highest possible value for their expertise.
