DURBAN - Police management in KwaZulu-Natal is optimistic Parliament’s portfolio committee on police will help ease some of its challenges.
Members of Parliament assessed the state of policing in KZN for the past three days.
The committee has heard reports from police stations, community crime fighting structures and police management in KZN.
The province faces a high crime rate but battles a lack of resources.
A shortage of resources and aging building infrastructure are just some of the many challenges facing the police service in KZN.
Meanwhile, the lack of a much-needed forensic laboratory is the reason there are delays in fighting crime.
But with Parliament’s committee on police having set eyes on these problems, police in KZN are hoping there will soon be some changes.
Provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said: "I must say I appreciate that as the head of police in the province, the fact that the committee is going to help push for us to get a proper and functional lab because the one we have, it’s got a lot of challenges."
