JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA)'s federal executive committee is expected to meet on Wednesday morning ahead of Parliament voting on the 2025 budget policy statement.
On Tuesday, the party’s coalition partners, the African National Congress (ANC) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), supported a proposal put forward by ActionSA, which backs the fiscal framework but has recommended amendments be made to do away with a VAT increase and for income tax relief for ratepayers.
And while the DA said that decisions taken had no legal standing, it confirmed that talks with the ANC on saving their Government of National Unity (GNU) coalition had hit a serious snag.
The DA has called for a sitting of its federal executive committee to finalise its position ahead of the gathering in Parliament on Wednesday.
While some still feel its possible to salvage talks with the ANC, others have already closed the door on the GNU, claiming the time pressures simply do not allow for the two parties to find one another.
EWN understands the DA was even willing to pause on its demands around the NHI and the Expropriation Act, arguing that these could be dealt with outside of the immediate economic considerations.
Meanwhile, ActionSA told EWN that it was not interested in filling the gaps in the GNU if the DA walked away but wanted a complete reset of the formation, which must include a formal agreement on the rules of engagement.
Parliament is due to vote on the 2025 budget at 2pm on Wednesday afternoon.
