MTHATHA - Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane has confirmed the young man who was shot and killed at the Walter Sisulu University (WSU)'s Mthatha campus was indeed a student at the institution.
On Tuesday, university management issued a statement claiming Sisonke Mbolekwa was not registered at the institution, sparking backlash from students who took to social media to deny their claims.

Mbolekwa was allegedly shot by a residence manager at the institution while protesting with other students, calling for better accommodation facilities.
Minister Nkabane visited the campus on Wednesday.
She says despite the institution’s claims, her department has investigated the matter and shared different findings.
“The unfortunate part of it is that as the department, we issued the statement without doing the due diligence or quality check to check whether the student or not.”
