JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has rubbished claims that its members were still receiving COVID-19 relief funds, years after the pandemic.
According to SANTACO, the Department of Transport is only processing and paying outstanding relief funds to operators that were delayed because of backlogs.
Spokesperson Rebecca Phala said that tax compliance was a key requirement to accessing the funds and members who are non-compliant cannot receive the relief.
"The criteria for qualifying taxi operators is when they are South African citizen, or a permanent resident in the republic and in possession of valid operating license and they must also be registered for income tax with the South African Revenue Service."
