MTHATHA - The family of a young man killed at Walter Sisulu University will appeal a court ruling preventing the media from broadcasting proceedings.

Sisonke Mbolekwa died after he was allegedly shot by a residence manager at the institution during a student protest on campus in Mthatha last month.

Manelisi Mapane, who is accused of pulling the trigger, is back in court on Friday to apply for bail.

A media application to cover the proceedings of this case was dismissed last week due to its sensitivity.

But the family of the victim says sensitive as it is, friends, family and fellow students who can't make it to court must be able to follow proceedings

The family’s spokesperson, Piaba Madokwe: “We are making that appeal particularly because we are told that the previous judgment was based on the protection of the families and the interest of the families, but that was done without consulting the family.”

She says the family has now submitted supporting affidavits to back up the media.

“We are now saying we heard you last week - but we are now saying please allow this to be broadcast.”
