JOHANNESBURG - Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has announced that government will begin rebuilding family homes of struggle stalwarts destroyed during apartheid, starting this financial year.

Kubayi was speaking at the reburial of anti-apartheid activists Benjamin Moloise and Abraham Mngomezulu, who were executed and buried in unmarked graves in the 1980s.

The ceremony took place on Saturday in Orlando, Soweto.

The Minister said the housing project follows requests made to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) by affected families.

Kubayi said the first phase would target 18 identified communities: "We have just signed off the regulations for the housing assistance repatriation project, which will be done starting from this financial year. These are houses that were burned by the apartheid government whose families, in terms of the TRC, have said that we must rebuild those family houses, and this will be done during this financial year to continue."
