JOHANNESBURG - As the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng prepares for next year's municipal elections, the party has emphasised the need to separate itself from leaders who are motivated by personal political gain.

The party's provincial task team shared the outcomes of its recent lekgotla during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Thursday.

One of the key resolutions was the acknowledgment of the negative impact that some self-serving leaders have had on the party’s public image.

The ANC's coordinator in Gauteng, Hope Papo, said that the party's renewal programme would need to be intensified in the province to ensure that only dedicated members were at the forefront of resuscitating Brand ANC.

"There are ANC leaders who are out of touch with their constituency and not schooled in the values and goal of the ANC, people who join the ANC for nefarious and ulterior motives. Part of the renewal is to deal with that section in the organisation."

He said that the party's focus was now to regain public trust in the ANC.

"The ANC has been on a continuous decline in electoral support. The rebuilding and renewal programmes are necessary to change the tide."

Papo was among those roped in by the ANC NEC to rebuild the organisation following its electoral decline last year.
