CAPE TOWN - Replacement pumps have arrived in Knysna, in the Garden Route municipality, after the town’s main domestic water pump broke down, leaving residents without running water for 10 days.

NGO Gift of the Givers, which stepped in to assist, said that the water challenges in Knysna were long-standing and had been worsened by failing infrastructure.

Knysna has been under water restrictions since December 2022, with the latest outage pushing the situation to breaking point.

Water tankers were dispatched earlier in the week to provide a reprieve for frustrated residents.

The NGO's spokesperson Mario Ferreira said: "The water supply at Knysna has been a problem that is re-occurring on a regular basis. There are pumps that are out of order, which is aggravating the situation. The pump that's in order can't provide nearly enough to keep the reservoir at a usable level."
