Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is threatening legal action against controversial media personality Ngizwe Mchunu
Malema wants a retraction and R1 million in damages following the remarks that Mchunu made about him.
Malema’s lawyers have written to Mchunu after he claimed the red berets’ president received R60 million from Nigerian drug dealers.
Mchunu made the allegations on the sidelines of an anti-illegal immigration protest organised by civic group March and March in Pretoria on Tuesday.
In a widely shared interview, Mchunu alleged Julius Malema is protected because of the money he reportedly pocketed from Nigerian drug peddlers.
Mchunu also claimed that Malema is willing to risk his political career to defend Nigerians and other undocumented foreign nationals.
Malema’s legal team said the claims are false, defamatory and create the impression that he is involved in criminal activity
They argue the statements are aimed at deliberately extracting political leverage in the build-up to the upcoming local government elections.
Mchunu is a well-known public figure who openly supports the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
He has been given 24 hours to retract the claims and apologise or face legal action.
