CAPE TOWN - The Good Party has accused the City of Cape Town of failing to properly inform low-income residents that they could be paying up to 10% more on their monthly bills.
Party secretary-general Brett Herron said the increase was uncovered during the party’s detailed assessment of the city's budget.
He said that the public participation process closed without residents being fully aware of the looming tariff hikes.
Herron is now calling on Cape Town residents to pressure their ward councillors to oppose the budget by boycotting the council sitting scheduled for 29 May.
"The fact is that despite the theatrics of a below-inflation 2% electricity tariff increase, what the city doesn’t advertise at all is that it has simply performed a tariff juggling act and will actually be increasing its revenues from ratepayers by more than 22% this year."
