CAPE TOWN - Four men have been sentenced to life in prison for killing two law enforcement officers.
Jan Niewenhuys and Sithembile Nyangiwe were shot and killed in September 2019 while guarding a construction site in Samora Machel, in Cape Town.
The Western Cape High Court heard that more than 21 shots were fired at the officers. Their firearms were also stolen.
Shortly after the two law enforcement officers were murdered, the gunmen were found hiding in a shack at a nearby informal settlement.
Ashwin Kennedy, Ndumiso Lutshetu, Bongani Mvamveki, and Siyabonga Witbooi were arrested and spent almost six years behind bars before their sentencing on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana said, "Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile said that this verdict serves as a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice and underscores our commitment to protecting those who dedicate their lives to safeguarding our communities."
