JOHANNESBURG - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has called for transparency as dozens of miners remain trapped at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Kloof mineshaft in Westonaria, Johannesburg.
The group has reportedly been below the surface since 10pm on Thursday night, following an engineering failure.

NUM is calling for swift action to bring all the miners back to surface, complaining that it was not alerted timeously about the crisis.
"They must resurface because their families and colleagues are worrying at the moment," said union spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu.
"They can’t keep on postponing, and they must tell the public the truth as to what happened when the workers got trapped underground. We are very worried about the incident that is ongoing at the operation. We want to see all those workers resurface without any fatality or injury to them."
Eyewitness News’s attempts to reach Sibanye-Stillwater for comment have been unsuccessful at this time.
