Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe said that reports of recent controversies involving her are part of a misinformation campaign spearheaded by the department’s disgruntled former spokesperson Lumka Oliphant.
Following her appearance in Parliament on Wednesday to present the annual performance plan of her department, it has today issued a statement saying the allegations against Tolashe are baseless and part of a broader effort to discredit her.
In a leaked audio recording of a study group meeting of ANC MPs ahead of yesterday’s parliamentary meeting, Tolashe can be heard saying she won’t answer any questions that are not directly related to her ministerial responsibilities.
As claims of impropriety mount against Minister Sisisi Tolashe including that she redirected a donation of vehicles intended for the ANC Women’s League to her family, and may have used public funds to employ a nanny for her grandchildren the Department of Social Development is hitting back.
It said that former spokesperson Oliphant who was dismissed last year is making unsubstantiated claims against Tolashe.
But Oliphant said that she’s not fazed by the accusations and that she’s trying to deflect several maladministration issues in her ministry –including irregular appointments.
" I should be arrested like she should be arrested as we are talking now. Therefore, the minister must not divert the questions she needs to give to the president".
The department’s acting communications head Sandy Godlwana said that since assuming office, Tolashe has taken decisive steps to clean up irregularities, enforce accountability, and restore integrity within the department.
“These actions are in the best interest of the public and are essential to ensuring that resources reach the vulnerable communities the department serves. The minister will not be intimidated or distracted by attempts to derail this work.”
The department said Tolashe will present a full and factual account to Parliament on all matters within her responsibility at an appropriate time.
Chairperson of Parliament’s Social Development Committee Bridget Masango has indicated that Tolashe will be expected to answer questions related to the use of public funds, at its meeting on Wednesday.
