Tributes pour in for former WC Anti-Gang Unit boss and ex-Mandela bodyguard Andre Lincoln

Lincoln, who was also the late President Nelson Mandela's bodyguard died on Friday at the age of 63.

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police have paid tribute to former top cop, Major General Andre Lincoln.

Lincoln died on Friday at the age of 63, after a long illness.

He was the late President Nelson Mandela's bodyguard and later became the head of the Anti-Gang Unit in the Western Cape.

Lincoln was remembered for playing a key role in shaping effective policing strategies against gang violence in both the Eastern and Western Cape.  

Western Cape provincial police commissioner Thembisile Patekile extended his condolences to Lincoln's family. 
 
"Lieutenant General Patekile described the late Major General Lincoln as a dedicated senior police officer who was committed to the creation of safer communities," said police spokesperson Novela Potelwa. 

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape has also sent its condolences to Lincoln's family following his passing.

In a statement, the party said he leaves behind an indelible legacy of service, bravery, and principled leadership.
