JOHANNESBURG - KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after a police officer allegedly shot and killed one person and injured two others in the Harry Gwala district.
On Saturday, during a suspected road rage incident near Machuwini, a constable and two of his colleagues were travelling from the Eastern Cape to the Free State when they collided into barricades after missing a roadworks detour.
The community members who saw the incident had alerted emergency services and also attempted to assist the law enforcement officials.
According to preliminary investigations, when a tow truck arrived, the constable opened fire and fatally wounded the driver.
It is understood that the two sergeants travelling with him tried to diffuse the situation and were caught in the crossfire.
One of the sergeants and a community member were wounded.
The constable then turned the gun on himself.
"Police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, inquest and reckless and negligent driving," said police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.
