11 Gauteng cops killed in first three months of 2025, reveals provincial commissioner

JOHANNESBURG - Eleven police officers have been killed in Gauteng in the first three months of the year, as a worrying attack on law enforcement continues.
This includes one officer on duty and 10 others off duty.
Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are among the provinces often hardest hit by police killings.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni revealed the numbers while delivering the fourth quarter crime statistics for the 2024/25 financial year on Thursday.
He said five suspects were arrested during this period for their involvement in the murders, while investigations continue to trace more suspects.
“We will not be deterred. We are strengthening our resolve to stabilise this threat by going out to the public through the soft approach to policing by engaging the communities we serve through izimbizo.”
Mthombeni said more work needs to be done to strengthen public trust.
“We will win back the trust and confidence of our communities. We are continuing to work together with the community to ensure that criminals do not have a place to hide.”
