JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police believe they are making headway in the fight against crime, with the latest statistics showing a drop in most categories.

Provincial police commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, delivered the fourth quarter crime statistics for the 2024/25 financial year on Thursday.

He said there were 8,000 fewer counts of serious crimes for the three months under review.

Contact crimes have dropped by more than 8%.

Within this category, the murder rate declined by almost 11%.

Mthombeni said the leading causes of murders in the province were arguments, misunderstandings, road rage, provocation and robbery.

"Murders in this province are mainly committed at a public place and then at the residence of the victim or perpetrator."

Despite a drop in the murder rate, 191 victims were recorded, and 75 dockets were registered in the system.

The hotspots for multiple murders are Soshanguve and Kagiso.

Sexual offences dropped by 2.1%, robbery dropped by 8.9% but kidnappings increased by 15%.
