JOHANNESBURG – The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) is calling for the protection of whistleblowers, particularly in cases of sexual harassment at South African Police Service (SAPS) academies.

This comes after trainees brought to light allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of trainers at learning facilities across the country.

The union picketed outside the Hammanskraal training facility in Pretoria on Wednesday and will continue their demonstration in Moloto in Mpumalanga on Thursday.

POPCRU spokesperson, Richard Mamabolo, said their demands to the institution include a thorough investigation into all reports of sexual abuse cases and the implementation of abuse prevention policies.

"Protection mechanisms for whistleblowers and victims who come forward. Mandatory training and sensitisation programmes for all staff and commanders interacting with trainees. An independent oversight structure to monitor and evaluate the implementation of these measures."
