JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police said they would not let their guard down following a double-digit drop in crime in the province in the first three months of the year.

Overall, the province said there were 8,000 fewer counts of serious crimes reported at the beginning of the year.

In the period under review, the murder rate declined by almost 11%, sexual offences dropped by 2%, and robbery dropped by almost 9%.

The category of kidnappings was one of the exceptions, with a 15% increase.

On Thursday, provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni delivered the fourth quarter crime statistics for the 2024/25 financial year.

He said that despite an improvement in the province, the crime challenge still needed all hands on deck.

"We acknowledge that there is still much work to be done, and as we move forward, we will continue to foster collaboration with our stakeholders in ensuring that we improve the safety and security of our communities."
