JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Legislature (GL)’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) should not be let off the hook for faltering on several high-profile cases.

The NPA has recently come under fire after some of its blunders saw it face massive setbacks in court.

These include the acquittal of televangelist Timothy Omotoso and his co-accused on a technicality.

Former Free State Premier Ace Magashule’s ex-PA, Moroadi Cholota, was also let off on a technicality in the asbestos corruption case this week after challenging her extradition from the United States (US).

Chairperson of the portfolio committee, Bandile Masuku, said the NPA’s losses were setting the country back in the fight against crime.

"We must also confront the failures of our justice system because if we can’t convict and increase our conviction rate then it makes our whole fight against crime fruitless."
