JOHANNESBURG – A mother and child have been killed in a fire at their home in Mayfair while four other family members have been rushed to hospital.
The fire broke out earlier on Monday in the five-bedroom home and police are currently investigating the cause.
The four survivors are being treated for smoke inhalation and minor burn injuries at a nearby hospital.
Preliminary investigations suggest the blaze started in the lounge area of the home.
It’s understood that two boys have been placed on ventilators at the hospital, while two others are being treated at the facility’s burn unit.
“Unfortunately, two individuals, a mother and a child, lost their lives in the incident. Four other patients were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor burn injuries,” said the EMS spokesperson, Nana Radebe-Kgiba.
She added that the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
