JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has again put the African National Congress (ANC) under pressure to shape up, as the party ramps up its renewal drive.

Ramaphosa made the repeated call while delivering the eulogy at anti-apartheid activist and Reverend Dr Tshenuwani Farisani’s funeral at the University of Venda in Limpopo over the weekend.

Farisani passed away on Thursday at the age of 76, after battling an undisclosed illness.

As a long-serving member of the ANC, he represented the party in parliament and went on to become the speaker of the Limpopo provincial legislature in 2004.

While Ramaphosa was speaking in his official capacity, the president also used the occasion to again tout the ANC’s renewal agenda.

“As a lifelong member of the ANC, he was focused on the renewal of his organisation so that it could live up to the values he subscribed to, and we should honour not only the dean in words but we should also honour him in actions. Let us be more just, more kind and more courageous. This is how his legacy as an ANC leader will endure.”
