Motion to censure Godongwana over 'mishandling' national budget falls flat

CAPE TOWN - A motion to censure Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana for what the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has termed the “mishandling” of the national budget has failed.
Last Friday, the MK Party’s Mzwanele Manyi led the debate on the matter, saying an unprecedented three attempts to table a national budget had created chaos.
While the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) called for Godongwana to resign during that debate, during the vote in the National Assembly on Monday afternoon, it did not back the MK Party’s motion for a censure.

Only the African Transformation Movement (ATM) and the United African Transformation (UAT) supported the call, while the Government of National Unity (GNU) partners and others rallied behind the minister.
House chairperson Werner Horn read out the result of the open vote.
“The result of the division is as follows: the ayes, 48, the noes, 250. Zero abstentions. The question is accordingly not agreed to.”
On Wednesday, both houses of Parliament will vote in separate sittings on the fiscal framework and revenue proposals that underpin the national budget.
