JOHANNESBURG - Three KwaZulu-Natal police officers will be handed jail sentences next week.

Officers Madoda Mhlongo, Siyabonga Mabhida and Prince Shezi, all formerly attached to the provincial Taxi Violence Unit in Durban, were found guilty of corruption after a lengthy trial.

The group appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday.

They will remain behind bars until sentencing next week.

The conviction of the three police officers stems from an incident that occurred in March 2019.

Claiming they were under pressure to make an arrest in connection with the murder of key witnesses in a case, the officers threatened to arrest a man.

He was told he either committed the crime or knew those involved.

The officers then demanded that the man pay R200,000 to prevent his arrest.

The matter was reported to the Hawks' serious corruption investigation, and an investigation ensued.

Shortly after the officers received the money, they were arrested.

The group will return to court on 19 June 2025 for sentencing.
