JOHANNESBURG Eastern Cape police have seized 10 illegal AK-47 rifles linked to taxi violence and cash-in-transit robberies in the province.

The provincial transport department says searches were conducted at two homesteads in Tombo and Mthumbane near Port St Johns last week, when the firearms and ammunition were discovered.

Three suspects, two women and one man, were arrested at the scene.

Transport department spokesperson Makhaya Komisa says the trio now face charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as contravening the Firearms Control Act.
