DURBAN - The fraud and corruption case of the seven people linked to a fraudulent passport syndicate in Durban has been postponed to July.

The group appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court to have new legal representatives formally appointed.

They were meant to start bail proceedings.

But the prosecutors indicated they have a few outstanding details to confirm, before the bail application process can go head.

Mmeli Zaca, Thandiwe Khwela, Zime Shange, Fumani Hlayisi, Bongiwe Kubheka, Lindokuhle Mpanza and Lungisani Mzobe are accused of running a syndicate issuing passports to undeserving foreign nationals.

They returned to dock on Friday and was meant to start a bail application process.

But this will now take place next month.  

NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson Kara said, “The accused appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court and the case was postponed to the 11th of July for verification of bail information. they are charged with fraud, contravention of the Identification Act, contravention of Immigration Act as well as corruption.”

The state has also indicated that it will oppose bail.
