Helen Zille has ramped up her Johannesburg mayoral bid, diving in (quite literally) to the next stage of her election campaign.

The DA's mayoral candidate for Joburg has gone viral after being filmed taking a dip in a pothole, using the stunt to highlight service delivery failures in the city.

Taking aim at local government, she captioned the video: "This is one of Joburg’s many public facilities for swimming. No opening hours and no maintenance plan, yet somehow it keeps expanding…"

"She's calling it a snorkel pool. It's a leaking excavation in Douglasdale that apparently has been around for three years, and residents have complained, and nothing has been done," says Primedia+ Digital Editor Barbara Friedman.

The video shows Zille, dressed in a wetsuit, swimming hat, and mask and snorkel, braving the decidedly murky-looking waters of the pothole.

"As she's tongue-in-cheek saying, this is probably one of the only new pools that have been built in Joburg," says Friedman.

In February, another video showing Zille sitting in a water-filled pothole in Linbro Park also went viral.

"Like her or hate her, she is a candidate in Joburg who is going to get the job done."
