Kganyago was inaugurated as the 16th Chancellor of Stellenbosch University on Friday after being unanimously elected in January.

JOHANNESBURG - South African Reserve Bank governor Lesetja Kganyago says he's looking forward to inspiring the next generation to realise their full potential. 

Kganyago was inaugurated as the 16th Chancellor of Stellenbosch University on Friday after being unanimously elected in January. 

Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Deresh Ramjugernath welcomed Kganyago as the institution's new chancellor.

"Governor Lesetja Kganyago is a widely respected economist, policy maker and public servant. As governor of the SA Reserve Bank, he has demonstrated exceptional courage, wisdom and steadiness in navigating times of economic uncertainty."    

Accepting his new role, Kganyago said he is aware of the complex legacy that he has inherited and the expectations that lie ahead. 

"I look forward to doing my part, given the important role of institutions in our democratic society, it is critical that we protect these institutions against threats to academic freedom."            

The governor said he's looking forward to inspiring the next generation to contribute to the growth and development of the country and continent.
