JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and Eskom have finally reached an agreement regarding the metro’s outstanding debt to the power utility, confirming the city will settle its R3.2 billion debt.

The city had initially refused to pay the full amount, claiming it was overcharged by more than R800 million.

The billing dispute nearly led to Eskom interrupting supply to the city in November 2024.

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, said the two had finally found one another.

"Johannesburg City Power will pay the R3.2 billion over a period of four years. This is a big ticket because this amount has been in dispute. The City of Johannesburg has done everything possible to pay the current account despite all these difficulties."
