JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA says it has accepted the possibility that its councillor in the Johannesburg city council may lose her position as Speaker.
Nobuhle Mthembu, who was elected to the position with support from the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), is facing a motion of no confidence on Wednesday.
But ActionSA does not have enough numbers to defend her and will have to rely on support from other parties.
Johannesburg mayor and ANC councillor, Dada Morero, is facing a motion of no confidence on Wednesday, brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA).
ActionSA has made it clear that it will not defend Morero, saying his ten months in office have shown he is unable to restore the city to its former glory.
As a result, the ANC is also unlikely to support Mthembu, whose position is now under threat.
ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont said the party was not fixated on positions.
"I have come from an engagement with our Speaker and the staff, where we have briefed them on the situation and they agree that we cannot vote to retain positions, but be against the wishes of the residents of the City of Johannesburg."
The ANC’s council whip is also facing a no-confidence vote on Wednesday.
