JOHANNESBURG - The mayor of Joburg, Dada Morero, is confident that the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s motion of no confidence in him is not going to succeed.

Morero is due to face his first no-confidence vote in council on Wednesday, less than a year since he was elected to the position.

The DA said that rampant service delivery failures and the establishment of a bomb squad prompted the party to file the motion.

Although the DA doesn’t have enough votes to unseat Morero, its regional leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, insists the party will not stand by and watch the city sink further into decay.

"We are very sad that we are here, but, unfortunately, this is something that has to be done," said Kayser-Echeozonjoku.

However, Morero said the African National Congress (ANC) had done its part and was certain that he would still hold the city’s top position by the end of the business day.

"So far, there are no issues that we are aware of as the ANC. We had two meetings yesterday just to finalise our strategy," said Morero.

Morero denied allegations of underperformance, saying the city had been making strides to address the metro’s issues.
