JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane acknowledges it doesn’t have the numbers for its motion of no confidence in council Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana to pass but said it would still go ahead with the motion.

The party wants the African Transformation Movement (ATM) councillor removed, accusing him of lacking impartiality.

Council is debating the motion and will vote on it on Thursday.

Ndzwanyana was elected to the position with the support of the African National Congress (ANC)-Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) coalition, which holds the majority in council.

Despite the unfavourable numbers, DA chief whip Ofentse Madzebatela said something still needed to be done.

"The DA brings this motion knowing very well that we don’t have the numbers, but we are hoping the consciousness of all democratically elected representatives will come to fruition and all of us will be allowed to express the needed expressions of our constituency."
