COSATU calls for toning down of hostilities between ANC & SACP

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is calling for the toning down of hostilities between its alliance partners, the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).

There's tension between the organisations after the SACP's decision to contest elections alone.

Last week, the ANC gave SACP members an ultimatum to pick which side they will be campaigning for in the upcoming local government elections.

COSATU's Matthew Parks said they are calling for an urgent political council, where these matters can be discussed.

“The working class does not find comfort when leaders of the alliance air their grievances with each other in public. More so in society, the poor who are battling to survive the rising cost of living, retrenchments, deteriorating public and municipal services, painful levels of crime amongst many other dire challenges.

“COSATU shares a membership and a constituency with its alliance partners. If solutions… are not found, we risk the danger of not only dividing the federation and its membership, but the working class as a whole.”
