Zondo is currently on trial for multiple sexual assault allegations and raping seven women from his congregation.
However, Shivambu said he had not been convicted of anything.
“He is a religious leader who has been leading for a very long time. He has been playing multiple leadership roles in his community and even in other organisations that we came from – he was coordinating an otherwise very large inter-religious movement. We did not make a mistake.”
