CAPE TOWN - Social grant beneficiaries from Khayelitsha who have not received their grant payouts for the past couple of months are frustrated with the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) verification process.
SASSA has embarked on the process to ensure that social grants are paid to the correct people.
It says it also wants to prevent cases where individuals continue receiving grants despite being listed on payroll systems of other entities.
Many social grant beneficiaries in Khayelitsha have voiced their displeasure in not being informed timeously about the verification process.
They’ve told Eyewitness News that the last two months without social grants had taken a toll on their families.
Most of them say they depend on social grant payouts to feed their families.
The Social Security Agency (SASSA) said that by law, it’s essential for all social grant beneficiaries to fully disclose all sources of income and inform SASSA of any changes to their financial status after the approval of their grant applications.

The verification process being conducted is to ensure that beneficiaries are still eligible to receive social grant payouts and prevent misuse of public funds. Beneficiaries here have accused SASSA of not communicating the process on time @NtuthuzeloNene pic.twitter.com/c3t7iph0Zx
