JOHANNESBURG - Some VW, Toyota, Volvo vehicles have been recalled after the National Consumer Commission (NCC) received notices from the carmakers on Tuesday.

The companies have recalled some of their models, citing several faults which could potentially pose safety threats to motorists.

The NCC said it was engaging affected suppliers to determine what steps to take next.

VW South Africa is recalling a total of 159 Golf 8s sold between 16 April and 30 June this year.

The vehicles are being recalled due to a defect in the front seat belt on the front passenger side.

The company said there was a possiblity that the seat belt was not properlly attached to the lower anchoring point, warning that in "the event of an accident of accident, this could result in serious or fatal injuries".

The NCC said that Volvo had recalled 26 of the XC 90 plug-in hybrid model year 2025 – 2026.

It said "the vehicle's braking functionality may be temoprarily disabled while using 'B' mode", which "could lead to potentially serious safety consequences for occupants".

More than 6,600 Toyota Hino 500s, available between May 2017 and December 2024, were also on the list of recalls.

According to the supplier, an incorrect cage bolt spanner was used.

"Although the parking brake will continue to operate during a vehicle failure, it will not be posisble to release the parking brake as the tool is incorrect."

The NCC has called on consumers to return the affected models to the dealerships.
