JOHANNESBURG - The South African Police Service (SAPS) says the damning allegations made by its KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi have eroded public trust.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola addressed the issue during a private firearm destruction operation in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning.
It comes days after Mkhwanazi alleged there was a crime syndicate operating within the SAPS.
He alleged the syndicate includes Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
Both men have denied the allegations.
Speaking for the first time since Mkhwanazi's bombshell Sunday media briefing, Masemola said the allegations have rocked the law enforcement agency.
Masemola said Mkhwanazi's allegations have placed in jeopardy the trust that communities have in the police.
"Let me unequivocally say the current state of affairs is unprecedented and it is concerning - it requires uncompromised intervention to restore public trust and stability in the organisation."
Masemola said he cannot say much about the veracity of the allegations until he has briefed President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa has been in Brazil for the BRICS summit, which wrapped up on Tuesday.
