CAPE TOWN - MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais said the Mitchells Plain Community Policing Forum (CPF) played a vital role in drafting a plan to tackle gang violence in the area.
This follows a flare-up of gang-related shootings in Mitchells Plain, which left seven people dead and seven injured last week.
Marais presented the draft gang intervention plan to various stakeholders in the community this week.
"This specific action plan will include an anti-gang strategy drafted by the Mitchells Plain Community Policing Forum."
Chairperson of the forum Norman Jantjies, said the plan included a multi-faceted approach.
"We need to look at the causes. The factors that contribute to gangsterism and crime. So we welcome provincial government's commitment to work with us, so that we have an integrated plan that will look at prevention as well, not just law enforcement."
Jantjies said the CPF and other community organisations will partake in an anti-gangsterism motorcade through the area on Sunday.
