DURBAN - The MK Party in KwaZulu-Natal has threatened chaos should the province's police boss, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, be persecuted for the explosive allegations he made a week ago.

The party's ex-combatants staged a march to the police provincial headquarters on Monday, pledging support for Mkhwanazi.

This was after he made shocking revelations about criminal syndicates that have allegedly infiltrated law enforcement agencies.

He has implicated Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and other top police brass.

While the allegations are now subject to a commission of inquiry for further investigations, the party said Mkhwanazi must be protected at all costs.

"We will rise and mobilise the community, and we will ensure that we just go as people, and we are many than the police officers - they can’t control us and all the people," said the party's Lwazi Mzobe.

Meanwhile, the police in the province said Mkhwanazi is grateful for the support but also encourages peaceful demonstrations.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Policing in KZN, Major General Phumelele Makoba said, "There has been peace since they started for the past week or so, we haven’t experienced anything negative, so also I was emphasising that General Mkhwanazi appreciates the support that he is receiving from the communities and the people of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Meanwhile, the MK Party Gauteng is warning it's capable of shutting down the country's economic hub to demonstrate support for Mkhwanazi.

The party held two 'hands off Mkhwanazi' marches in Durban and Johannesburg on Monday, with another one planned in Cape Town on Tuesday.

MK Party Gauteng spokesperson, Abel Tau, said the series of demonstrations will culminate on Friday at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

"We believe that we will bring Gauteng to a standstill and we are going to have a mother of all marches to ensure that finally those who are reluctant in making sure that they protect our people, working for our people, understand that now is not the time for talk but action."

The party handed over a memorandum of demands to the John Vorster police station calling for the arrest of Mchunu.
