Agriculture Dept warns of new foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in FS
The first case was confirmed last Thursday at a commercial farm in Kroonstad.
JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Agriculture has warned of a new outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle in the Free State.
The first case was confirmed last Thursday at a commercial farm in Kroonstad.
The latest outbreak comes after five provinces were affected by the same disease in cattle earlier in 2025, with KwaZulu-Natal hardest hit.
The farm in Kroonstad that confirmed a case of foot and mouth disease was immediately placed in quarantine.
The cattle showed signs of being lame, salivating with sores on their hooves and mouths.
According to the department, from July, 270 foot-and-mouth cases were addressed, with 249 unresolved.
In June, the department placed a temporary international trade ban while it orders vaccines.
