DURBAN - Marchers in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have called on police to intensify the fight against crime as they voice their support for provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Various organisations marched in support of Mkhwanazi on Tuesday.
This follows the explosive allegations Mkhwanazi made a week ago, alleging corruption in the law enforcement agencies. The allegations pointed to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who has since been put on leave of absence by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
A group of community members, including churches, security organisations, crime-fighting structures and political organisations, picketed in the Durban CBD to show their support for the KZN police chief.
They said that while the allegations he made are yet to be investigated further, they support him.
Pastor Mervyn Reddy said, “The provincial commissioner is the man that we want to follow, he is transparent and righteous that wants the truth to be public, nobody must try to stop him because we are here to stand with him.”
The protesters were set to deliver a memorandum of demands, citing crime concerns in the province.
