DURBAN - The Cooperative Governance (COGTA) Department in KwaZulu-Natal has reiterated its call for vigilance to prevent fire-related disasters.
Last year, the province experienced wildfires, which claimed at least 14 lives, including six firefighters who died while battling the blaze.
The latest call follows a fire in Montclair, south of Durban, where an elderly couple narrowly escaped death.
The two were rescued by two locals from a blaze that engulfed their home.
COGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said: "The MEC also issued a vital reminder to all KwaZulu-Natal residents to exercise extreme vigilance as the province navigates the winter season, with the risk of structural fires significantly increasing during colder months due to various factors, including the use of heating appliances. The MEC urges everyone to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of their homes and that of their families."
