DURBAN - Ethekwini police management is locked in a meeting with Hammarsdale community representatives over crime-related concerns.

For the past two days, community members have been protesting, calling for the removal of the local police station commander.

They said that under his leadership, crime had been rising in Hammarsdale.

The situation is relatively quiet here on Thursday with no protestors taking to the streets.

This comes as a group, which includes the community policing forum (CPF), meets with the police's top brass.

But the community insists the only way to fight crime will be to hire new management for the local police station.

Representative Etienne Olivier said they were hoping for a good outcome from the meeting.

"We’ve arranged with the district commanders to come meet with the core group of what they call forum, community in blue and business forums in the and after that we will hopefully have good news for the community."

The community said that deadly shootings and robberies had become common in the area, with a call made for the closure of illegal alcohol spots.
