The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) will increase fares on the Metrorail network from 1 August 2025.

PRASA last implemented a price increase 10 years ago.

Approved by the Department of Transport following consultations in 2023, PRASA states the fee hike is aimed at helping it cover rising energy and maintenance costs, and to fund improvements in safety and security across trains and stations.

Single tickets will go up by R2.50, while return tickets will increase by between R5.50 and R6.00, depending on the distance travelled.

To ease the impact, PRASA is bringing back weekly and monthly tickets with more discounts for regular commuters.

Off-peak discounts of up to 50% will also remain in place for those travelling between 9am and 2pm.

Despite the fare hike, PRASA maintains that its services remain the most affordable public transport option in the country.
