The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a warning to the public about a phishing scam involving fake traffic fine emails sent under the guise of the official NaTIS (National Traffic Information System) site.
Victims are being tricked into paying bogus fines, with some reports indicating that scammers have accessed banking details to make fraudulent deductions.
In the latest version of the scam, individuals receive an email claiming they owe a R210 fine, which has allegedly increased to R420 due to late payment.
The message pressures recipients by threatening further increases and falsely promises a refund of interest if payment is made quickly, tactics designed to provoke panic and quick action.
The RTMC has stressed that NaTIS does not send unsolicited payment requests via email and advises the public to verify fines through the official website or local traffic departments.
