JOHANNESBURG - The Johannesburg High Court is on Thursday expected to hand down judgment in the trial of former pre-school teacher Amber Lee Hughes.

Hughes is accused of raping and murdering her four-year-old step-daughter, Nada-Jane Challita.

The former school teacher, who was arrested in 2023, has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

In January 2023, the body of the little girl was found floating in a bathtub in the home she shared with her father.

It is understood that the child was left in her care on the day she died.

Hughes was arrested on the same day the little girl’s body was discovered and has been behind bars since.

During the trial, the court had heard of Hughes’s volatile romantic relationship with the four-year-old’s father.

The High Court was expected to hand down its judgment last week, but the matter was postponed due to Hughes' last-minute change in her legal representation.
